“The idea is to write it so that people hear it and it slides through the brain and goes straight to the heart.”
-Maya Angelou

Over the past couple of months I’d been looking into publishing a short story of mine via digital download, such as in e-book format. Well, I am making good progress toward its publication debut. I am currently going through the edit of the story that I paid an editor to perform. I considered a few editors before resting on one whom I believe was a good fit for this story, and also economically friendly for where I am right now. I could have done without the edit, but I seriously wanted this to be the best it can be. And I am so glad that I did decide to hire an editor, as she’s caught many things and noticed sentences and phrases that weren’t necessary to the story. And you know what that means? A stronger story!

I also needed a cover. My original idea for the cover I couldn’t do — it required the expertise of a graphic designer. And although I know several graphic designers, scheduling and other reasons prevented me from pursuing that avenue. So, I got a stock photo, used the Paint program to insert the text, and I think it came out pretty well. It’s simple, but it tells so much of what the story’s about. Here’s the photo:

Perhaps you’re wondering why I chose to take this story the route of a digital download. The reason being that this story has been shopped around for a very long time and has gotten no acceptances. I find myself resting the cause for that on the fact that it’s nearly 8,000 words. How many markets would want to accept a short story at that length?

So, I’m taking the Smashwords route, and I even plan on publishing it via Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing. I’ll keep everyone updated as far as when and where it is available for purchase!
